Trains have not stopped at Monte Porzio Catone for more than eighty years, but the station is still there. Since 2024 it has housed the Wine Museum, the right place to understand why these hills are part of the Frascati wine area.
Why a wine museum in a station?
The building was Monte Porzio’s station on the Rome, Fiuggi, Alatri and Frosinone railway, opened in 1916 and closed in 1944. The restoration turned it into a space devoted to the wine culture of the area, and part of the route uses an old railway tunnel: the visit is designed as a train journey through the town’s vineyards.
What is inside?
The route follows the whole path that wine takes:
- growing the vine and the volcanic soils of the Alban Hills;
- the harvest and the making of the wine;
- bottling, ageing in barrels and transport;
- archaeological finds, old cellar tools and interactive installations.
Next to the route there is a wine shop and a tasting room, with guided tastings of Frascati DOCG and other local wines, and a programme of events and workshops.
When did it open?
The museum opened in 2024: by May of that year it was already one of the stops on the itineraries of the Museum Grand Tour network, with a visit and tasting.
For opening times, tickets and tasting bookings, check the museum’s official website, where they are kept up to date.
How do you get there?
The museum is in Piazza Trieste. If you come by public transport you can no longer get off a train here: take the train to Frascati or Colle Mattia and then the bus, as we explain in how to get to Monte Porzio Catone.
